Hi Friend,

Despite tons of lawsuits and the Constitution itself saying that every person in the U.S. should be counted through the Census, immigration status be damned—Donald Trump has taken to saying that the federal government should not prioritize counting immigrants, because (redacted racist reason not worth repeating to you).

I only know this because my parents have fallen into the dark pit of hate and misinformation that Donald Trump, and those working with him, have perpetuated in the last few years. They used to read actual news, be able to understand perspectives outside their own, and ask questions when presented with new information.

Now they troll the White House website for propaganda that they can parrot.

I’ve made it my personal responsibility to talk to my parents about what’s actually true versus what is right-wing scaremongering with no basis in fact or science. A big part of how I’ve done that is by sharing Bitch articles, like this one, that explains exactly how and why manipulating the Census is a strategic decision by this administration meant to disempower communities of color.

Bitch is a critical resource for me in talking to my family. And as we near the presidential election I want to highlight one very specific thing about Bitch that is important: They are intentional about not repeating Trump’s messaging and thereby validating and amplifying it. They go back to the root of the issues they cover and why it’s important. When I look for articles to counter my parents, this is critical. Any opinion they’ve been told that’s repeated in a rebutting article only serves as a life-line for their perspective to be validated. That’s all they would ever see if I sent that to them. Bitch’s articles offer a different perspective that actually comes from the people and communities most impacted by the laws and policies they’re talking about. I know these articles leave them more speechless and challenge their thinking more.

Bitch has always been an important resource for me to stay educated on the perspectives of people from different backgrounds than me. I am a better feminist because I read Bitch. But this year, it has been especially critical. When I’m too angry to write a coherent rebuttal, when I’m worried about whether I’ve covered all of the facts that I should be covering in an argument, there has always been a Bitch article that’s been heavily researched and written in accessible language that does the heavy lifting of debating a straw man argument for me.

I wouldn’t be able to continue fighting back against misinformation and right-wing rhetoric without the tools that Bitch has given me. It’s why this week I made another donation to Bitch and why I’m asking you to please also support Bitch today.

Friend, there’s a lot at stake this year. Through all of this, Bitch has offered logic, reason, and empathy. If you have valued this like I have, I hope you’ll pitch in today with me and help Bitch reach their $75,000 goal by September 25.

To the truth.

Bitch Media is an award-winning, nonprofit, feminist media outlet. We're community funded because we believe that there's no for-profit way to make truly independent, intersectional feminist media. If our work has to compete with a self-interested advertiser or a major investor, it's never going to be the kind of world-changing, movement-making, uncompromising work that needs to be done. It'll just be another contract negotiated in a patriarchal world. You like our attitude? Us too.
