As you may or may not know, Terry was fired after a few weeks of teaching 8th grade (she talked about it here) so she and Quinta connected over their shared respect for teachers. Another nice bonding moment in the interview is that Quinta and Terry are the same height – 4’11”. Here’s that moment in the interview:
GROSS: When I'm in front of a microphone, I have to stand on something. Like, if there's a podium in front of me, I need something to raise me so that you see more than a forehead sticking up. When you started in stand-up, were you self-conscious about being short, that people wouldn't be able to see you over other people's heads or that you wouldn't have enough, you command on stage because you weren't physically overbearing?
BRUNSON: You know what? No. For most of my life, I did not feel self-conscious about being short. If anything, I looked at it as like a superpower. It was something very interesting about me, and people thought I was cute and funny. And when I started doing stand-up, it was just another thing to be funny about. I feel like I've become more aware of it recently. Like, recently, I'm like, man, I am not giving grown woman to people. I kind of would like to give full grown adult, but it's not giving that! And now that I'm in this space of, you know, producer/showrunner, I want to appear as big as I feel on the inside. I'm just not sure I do.
Terry has talked about being very short before -- Joan Didion and Kieran Culkin come to mind. And she discussed her height difference with Bo Burnham, who is 6' 5". Did I just come up with a bizarre idea for a theme week? Might have to bring this up at the next staff meeting…
