Extra Special Care for an Extra Special Pup

Every once in a while, Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation meets an extra special animal who needs some extra special care. ARF was contacted by a partner shelter to rescue Mel: a 9-year-old pit bull who was experiencing mobility issues. While she seems happy as can be, and always greets people with a wagging tail and a smile, x-rays showed several instances of spinal disc degeneration. This condition likely put pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root, causing partial paralysis in her back legs. ARF’s team found a unique harness, which supports her hips and prevents her from stumbling while on walks.

Mel has an appointment with a canine rehabilitation specialist this month, and ARF’s team is hopeful that her storybook ending is in sight. Advanced medical conditions like Mel’s are difficult for many small, municipal shelters to address. Fortunately, thanks to your support, ARF is always there to answer the call and save these special dogs and cats, giving them the second chance they deserve.

Interested in giving this very special girl a special home? Mel's ready to meet potential adopters!

ARF is celebrating President Biden's signing of the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers (PAWS) for Veterans Therapy Act. This will create a five-year pilot program pairing veterans with mental health challenges with canines training to be psychiatric service dogs.

Do You Have an Emergency Go-Bag?

In case of disaster, ARF recommends keeping a pet go-bag, which should include: pet food, a bowl, a leash and collar with your phone number, medicine, a first aid kit, all important paperwork (vaccinations, health history, proof of ownership, pet photo, ect), and some comfort items.
