The Bitch community can (and HAS) done better than this. Come on.

Dear friend,

News of a measly $600 (that's a one-time payment for our aghast non-US friends) stimulus check possibly coming our way to help "relieve" our financial burdens from almost a year of coronavirus-related suffering says a lot about where we are.

I'll spare you the excess ranting. But there's two threads to how this directly relates to Bitch and why you matter so much. The first is that this financial "relief" speaks to where our country's priorities currently lie: In continuing to prop up what's beneficial for the wealthy and those who remain in power. The work that Bitch does to find and connect with readers who will go on to become critical of the media they consume and what they see in our political landscape is not valued by those in power, because it threatens that power.

Secondly, we continue to fail at addressing the gendered ways in which COVID has impacted our landscape. Women who make up the majority of the workforce in varying industries such as nursing, education—and yes, nonprofits like Bitch—are suffering disproportionately more, and relief has never come. We have always had to (and will continue having to) work more with less.

So what does this mean? It's a reminder that true, unabashed, non-consumerist feminism has never made enough of a bottom line for anyone to invest in it but the people who need it the most. Bitch Media exists to serve readers like you. And the people who see the value in that work enough to support it? Readers like you.

Unfortunately, we're not a megachurch that won't open its doors to flood victims, so we won't be getting a $4 million dollar "small business COVID relief loan" in any upcoming stimulus packages. We have a more modest goal of raising $90,000 by December 31:

We have a little less than two weeks to go, and we're almost there: As of this morning, we're at $70,000. Which means that if:

We'd be so much ($10,000, to be exact) closer to our goal by December 31st.

Reader, it's going to take this much collective action from the Bitch community to make it, but it's what we have to ask of you when the only people who see the value in Bitch's feminist critique and analysis are people like you. Whether you value Longform Friday, the Weekly Reader, or how bitchmedia.org and our social media keeps you up-to-date: Please make a donation, join us as a member, or subscribe to Bitch magazine and support us how you can today.

Thank you for valuing what we do.

P.S. Seriously, $600? Don't get me wrong, it'd make an impact at Bitch and would only take 24 readers donating $25 to make happen. But our own government can't do more than that?

Bitch Media is an award-winning, nonprofit, feminist media outlet. We're community funded because we believe that there's no for-profit way to make truly independent, intersectional feminist media. If our work has to compete with a self-interested advertiser or a major investor, it's never going to be the kind of world-changing, movement-making, uncompromising work that needs to be done. It'll just be another contract negotiated in a patriarchal world. You like our attitude? Us too.
