Dear Aaaaaaa, PETA Asia's recent investigation of the cashmere industry in China and Mongolia reveals intense pain and suffering:
I'm committed to stopping such abuse—and I know that as a caring PETA supporter, you are, too. Will you please put your compassion into action for defenseless goats and other animals by donating to PETA's "Save Our Skins" Matching-Gift Challenge? The campaign deadline is June 30, and every gift you make before then will be doubled, dollar for dollar, to help more animals. I think I'm like most people—I want to be optimistic, to believe that each new investigation won't uncover gut-wrenching abuse. But unfortunately, I'm wrong … every time. PETA Asia's investigation of the cashmere industry presented us with obstacles that we could have never imagined. Eyewitnesses had to be taken to remote locations by complete strangers, with no way of contacting us. They quite literally put their lives on the line to reveal cruelty and help change the world for these goats. Exposing the industries that try to conceal their cruelty is a huge, expensive, dangerous task, which PETA can only accomplish through the determination and generosity of people like you. I've lost count of the number of anguished messages I've received from investigators who have just seen workers break a sheep's neck, skin a puppy, torment a rabbit, or do other atrocious things to vulnerable animals. I wouldn't give this work up for anything in the world, because the eyewitnesses and I—and supporters like you, Aaaaaaa, who keep us going—are the lucky ones. We get to be part of the fight, to be the ones who open people's eyes and make a difference for animals. Your gift right now can help provide the resources needed to expose and stop suffering in the global skins trade. Even $5 makes a difference. I see firsthand the impact of every investigation and campaign, and I know you won't want to miss this opportunity to have your support go twice as far for animals. Our exposés of the Chinese fur industry have changed millions of consumers' minds about fur, even in a country where there are no laws to protect animals. We've blown the lid off the angora industry, causing exports to plummet and pushing hundreds of brands to stop selling the material. Because of what PETA Asia unearthed in South Africa, the mohair industry went from hip to hideous almost overnight. Our wool exposés led to the first-ever cruelty-to-animals convictions for Australian shearers. And today, caring people no longer consider any animal-derived material to be ethical. Sincerely, |
