If you’ve ever spent a holiday season with a canine companion curled up by your side or tucked into a cozy blanket, you know that every dog deserves to enjoy the comfort and safety of an indoor home, a warm bed, and a family’s love.
But sadly, every winter, “backyard dogs” remain perpetually chained or penned outside with little (or nothing) to protect them from the freezing wind, rain, and snow. Without your help, these dogs may not make it through the bone-chilling nights ahead.
It’s disturbing to imagine a sensitive dog languishing outside in weather that can quickly turn deadly—but PETA’s fieldworkers encounter dogs in urgent need every single day. They’ve seen dogs chained to trees in barren backyards with nothing more than an overturned barrel or trash can to serve as a poor excuse for “shelter”—if they have anything at all. They’re left miserable, shivering, and wet in inches of mud, sometimes without fresh food or even clean water to drink.
PETA provides doghouses that are built with soft rubber flooring and thick insulated walls to help protect dogs from the cold winter elements.
PETA’s doghouse sponsorship program has helped our fieldworkers deliver more than 7,800 doghouses to dogs in desperate need of shelter. Our insulated doghouses are sturdy and durable, offering protection from extreme winter cold—and from scorching summer heat. We deliver each one with treats, a toy, and straw bedding for extra insulation against the cold.
