The federal government just passed a policy effectively banning new thermal coal projects in Canada – but it's still mining and exporting this harmful fossil fuel across the globe. Thermal coal is used to produce electricity in many countries, despite its reputation as the dirtiest fossil fuel in existence. The process of mining, transporting, and burning coal wreaks havoc on the environment, the climate and human health – it is responsible for more than 800,000 premature deaths a year. This is why Canada has committed to stop burning thermal coal for electricity here at home, but as you’re reading this, we continue to mine and export it to the rest of the world. It’s time for Canada to take responsibility for the devastating effects that Canadian-mined coal will have on communities overseas, like air pollution and respiratory illnesses. Add your name to demand that the federal government ban the export of thermal coal and restrict its mining here in Canada.
