Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

We are in a climate emergency. And when there is a climate emergency, we cannot build pipelines. Full stop.

We have just 11 years to cut our climate pollution by half to avoid a climate catastrophe (that’s according to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report released last fall). Canada’s climate is warming twice as fast as the global average (according to an Environment and Climate Change Canada report released last month) and emissions from oil sands are as much as 64% higher than oil companies have been telling us (according to an April 2019 paper published in Nature).

Here are five steps that the government needs to take to tackle the climate crisis:

1.  Set climate targets aligned with the ambition required by the science, including adopting a much stronger 2030 target before next year's UN climate conference and putting the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 into law.
2.  Stop the approval of new fossil fuel projects. This means no new or expanded pipelines, no new LNG terminals, no new coal mines, and no new tar sands mines.
3.  Create an exit plan that breaks our economic reliance on the oil and gas sector, while supporting workers and communities impacted by the shift to a sustainable economy.
4.  Stop giving tax breaks and subsidies to fossil fuel companies. Every year the government currently gives $3.3 billion of taxpayer money go to the very corporations that are causing the climate crisis. That money would be better invested in renewable energy sources and other clean technologies that will power our grandchildren’s world.
5.  Fully implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People with attention paid to free, prior and informed consent.

Anything less would be climate denialism.

The expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline would increase shipments of oil by 590,000 barrels a day. That’s an additional 86 million tonnes of downstream greenhouse gas emissions every year. If this figure is new to you, it may be because in February, the National Energy Board refused to study the full life-cycle global warming effects of the pipeline. 86 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions is the equivalent of an additional 13 million cars on the road, or 75 million acres of forest loss.

Canadians re-elected your party because of your stated commitment to tackle the climate crisis. Now you must do the right thing and halt the Trans Mountain pipeline, along with all new and proposed fossil fuel projects. It’s the only way to re-establish your government’s legacy.
