Demand the EPA ban chlorpyrifos NOW!

The Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit found that the EPA illegally kept the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos on the market. The agency did too little to determine the pesticide is safe for children.

Chlorpyrifos is one of the most dangerous pesticides on the market. But for decades the EPA has allowed it to continue to be used, despite the harm it causes to children’s developing brains. People who are regularly exposed to toxic pesticides -- farmworkers and their families -- have an increased risk of severe neurological conditions.

This court ruling provides an opening to push the EPA to ban it once and for all across the U.S.

Dear EPA,

I am writing to urge the EPA to protect children from the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos. Exposure to chlorpyrifos is linked to increased risk of a range of serious health problems including autism spectrum disorder, attention disorders, and reduced IQ and working memory in children.

In 2016, the EPA determined that chlorpyrifos exposure results in unacceptable risks, especially for young children and infants exposed prenatally. The agency was set to phase out all uses of chlorpyrifos, however, the Trump Administration reversed this decision.

Since then, chlorpyrifos has been banned in the European Union as well as several states — California, New York, Maryland and Hawaii. Corteva (formerly Dow Chemical), the primary manufacturer of the chemical, also announced that it will discontinue production of chlorpyrifos.

The EPA’s own scientific review determined that:

•	Food exposures exceed safe levels, with children ages 1-2 exposed to levels of chlorpyrifos that are 140 times what the EPA deems safe. 
•	There is no safe level of chlorpyrifos in drinking water. 
•	Chlorpyrifos is found at unsafe levels in the air at schools and homes in rural communities. 
•	Workers who mix and apply chlorpyrifos are exposed to unsafe levels, even with maximum personal protective equipment and engineering controls.
•	There are effective alternatives for pest management that are less toxic for children, farmworkers and rural communities.

Please follow the science and The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and ban chlorpyrifos. It is time to put the health of the American public over pesticide industry profits.
