Stop Formosa Plastics from polluting our oceans!

Our planet is already overrun with plastic pollution. Every minute, the equivalent of an entire garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans. And producing plastics is harmful to the communities surrounding the plants.

Dear Colonel Murphy:

I am writing to respectfully request that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers thoroughly reevaluate Formosa Plastics’ permit to build a petrochemical complex in St. James, Louisiana (MVN-2018-00159-CM).

Among its many impacts, the Formosa Plastics complex will permanently destroy a huge swath of important surge-reducing wetlands, detrimentally alter the area’s hydrology, risk destabilizing the Mississippi River levee, disrupt unmarked burial sites, harm sensitive wildlife  and damage migratory bird habitat. The project will also contribute to  more severe flooding and climate disruption--it will emit an astounding 13.6 million tons of greenhouse gas pollution each year. The air, water, and plastic pollution from the facility will harm wetlands, wildlife and public welfare.

With the permit under reevaluation, now is the time to provide a robust analysis of the environmental justice impacts of this proposed project, including a full evaluation of its impacts to the unmarked burial sites on the property, which are important historic and cultural resources for this  community and our country. The Corps must also take into consideration the knowledge and perspectives of the affected communities, especially the residents of St. James Parish who could be descendants of those buried on the site. I urge you to open a public comment period and hold a public hearing to solicit public input from affected community members.

The Corps should be prioritizing environmental justice, not permitting a mega-polluting facility in a predominantly low-income, Black community already burdened with unacceptably high pollution levels and cancer rates. Expanding plastic production in Louisiana will harm local communities with more toxic air and water pollution, exacerbate environmental racism and contribute to the growing global plastic pollution crisis.

In summary, I urge the Corps to listen to the St. James community and revoke permit #MVN-2018-00159-CM for the proposed Formosa Plastics petrochemical complex. A full and transparent reevaluation will make it clear that this plant should not be built.
