Tell CalPERS you support its move to expand its environmental commitment!

Palm oil plantations are destroying our rainforests, worsening climate chaos, and putting communities around the tropics under threat.

The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is considering a policy to broaden and deepen its commitment to environmental protection -- including pressuring companies that produce palm oil, soy, beef and other forest-destroying crops to clean up their acts. But the new policy isn’t a done deal yet. The board is set to vote on it soon -- so we need your help to make sure it passes!

Dear CalPERS board,

As a resident of California, I want to see our state’s public money invested in ways that secure a healthy future or all Californians and for the planet. That’s why I’m glad to know that CalPERS is planning to update and expand its Governance and Sustainability Principles to give greater attention to the environmental and social issues I care about. Today I’m signing on to this letter to thank you in advance for taking the right step to protect people and the planet.

California has an outsized influence on global markets; as a universal owner, CalPERS holds a lot of sway over the companies it invests in. I am encouraged to know that the CalPERS board understands that financial sustainability and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. If I’m going to retire, I’d like to retire on a livable planet -- and I’d like my retirement fund to be a force for good along the way.

The proposed changes to your Governance and Sustainability Principles are a big step in the right direction, and I encourage you to support them -- and then to put them into practice by holding corporations accountable for the damage they may cause, and giving them incentives to stay on the path of sustainability.
