Tell Congress: Don’t let Trump and Pruitt scrap critical research on chemicals!

Trump and Pruitt are trying to discontinue funding for scientific research on the impacts of chemicals on children’s health. This is just the latest attack on independent science from the Trump administration.

We need your help to stop the administration from slashing this critical scientific research.

Dear legislator,

I’m very alarmed by the recent news that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is closing the National Center for Environmental Research (NCER), which gives out millions of dollars in grants every year to study the effects of chemicals on children. I urge you to work with leaders in Congress to hold a hearing and investigate whether EPA is serving the public interest as directed by law. The EPA should put our children ahead of polluting industries. The National Center for Environmental Research serves a critical function and is responsible for groundbreaking research. For example, NCER helped with a study examining dietary exposure to chlorpyrifos and levels of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol in urine. NCER also helped with research showing that children exposed prenatally to high levels of the pesticide chlorpyrifos have lower intelligence testing scores at age seven.

This research is critical because chlopryrifos is a dangerous, neurotoxic organophosphate pesticide. Chlorpyrifos is so dangerous that, after years of study, the EPA, based on the weight of the scientific evidence, was set to ban all uses of this pesticide in 2015. However, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt reversed the proposed ban.

The science is clear -- we need action now. I urge you to work with other members of Congress to protect the National Center for Environmental Research, which is tasked with investigating the harms of toxic pesticides including chlopryrifos, not dismantle it. Congress should be holding the pesticide industry and EPA accountable by working to take these toxic pesticides off the market.

I urge you to work with leaders in Congress to hold a hearing and investigate whether EPA is serving the public interest as directed by law. The EPA should put our children ahead of polluting industries.
