Mr. Pascall,

I’m writing to urge you and First Quantum Minerals to reject financing for the Pebble Mine in Alaska.

The Pebble Mine would be an absolute disaster for the environment and local communities -- and for the reputation of First Quantum Minerals and its shareholders.

Local communities have long been opposed to Pebble Mine. More than 65 percent of all Alaskans, 80 percent of Bristol Bay residents -- including Native people -- and more than 85 percent of commercial fisherman strongly oppose it. They, along with us at Friends of the Earth, will fight for Bristol Bay every step of the way until it is fully protected from reckless developments like Pebble Mine.

And it’s no secret why: the mine could generate more than 10 billion tons of dangerous waste, wipe out 90 miles of salmon streams and pollute more than 5,000 acres of wetlands, ponds and lakes. The salmon population would likely plummet -- with catastrophic impacts for the local communities.

The regulatory, operational, legal, financial, political and reputational risks associated with the Pebble Mine are enormous, which contributed to New York-based investment firm Kerrisdale Capital Management's conclusion that Northern Dynasty Minerals is “worthless” and the Pebble Project is “not commercially viable.”

It's no wonder Mitsubishi Corporation, Anglo American and Rio Tinto Group all pulled out after spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to advance the project.  We urge you to follow their lead and reject financing for the Pebble Mine.
