Butterflies of the Sea

December 11, 2018: These sea butterflies, or marine snails sport wing-like swimming appendages to maneuver themselves through the water. Masses of these pteropods, or “wing-feet” drift with the currents in the open ocean, where they become food for fish and whales. Like garden snails, their earthbound relatives, pteropods build calcium carbonate shells. But pteropods’ thin, delicate shells may be vulnerable to the ocean’s changing chemistry. WHOI scientists have been investigating how these beautiful creatures will be affected by ocean acidification, comparing pteropods in ocean regions with normal acidity and regions already showing acidification.

EVENTS & END NOTES

Peanut Butter Club

Presents the video “The Real Story of Christmas” on Friday, December 21, at noon, in Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water St., Woods Hole. Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. Sponsored by the WHOI Visitor Center. Coffee, tea, and cookies served. Donations accepted. More »
