Why is this taking so long...

...What are you reading, War and Peace? Well, actually, yes. Yes, I am reading War and Peace – the monumental work by Leo Tolstoy. It’s thanks to the “Great American Read,” a few years back when I decided to really tackle the classics. 'Where is all this going?' you ask...well, I'll tell you.

This week the Russian government returned the remains of one of Napoleon’s favorite Generals, Charles-Étienne Gudin. I just happened to read all about the Battle of Smolensk in War and Peace, and thought what an interesting intersection of the novel and real life events. Yay for books!

In other news, ice worms!  Not these ice worms described in the adorable PBS Kids show, Molly of Denali, but these ice worms described on a glacier by Nell Greenfieldboyce.

Swing and a miss? Hardly for Pete Alonso at the MLB Home Run Derby early this week, with his Maine-made Dovetail bat. Check our feature from few years back on them.

Lastly, more from BBC, or Beeb as some know it… the most recent word on night owls vs. early morning risers. Since the Tour De France nightly stage repeat is keeping me up, I’m with team night owls this week.

If you need music, perhaps Kraftwerk’s Tour De France Album?

Also thanks to Esta for sitting in last week, a Raymond Poulidor to my Jacques Antiel perhaps? (Going for the Maillot Jaune with this one!)

Zzzzz,

Mark
