“I miss teaching and I miss socializing" - Natalia, a 77-year-old Ukrainian refugee from Zaporizhzhia, living in Poland. When the full-scale invasion began, Natalia was living at her apartment in Zaporizhzhia. Constant shelling forced her to go to the bomb shelter often. Unfortunately, Natalia’s health condition deteriorated sharply due to her permanent stay in the basement. That is why she decided to leave the city. Natalia is still very interested in personal development, as she used to be a physics and math teacher. When she learned about the opening of the Project HOPE mobile MHPSS unit at her refugee center, she was extremely happy, "Sometimes I feel very sad here and don't know what to do with all this free time. Now, I will have the opportunity to do something, learn something new, and communicate with others.” Learn more about our work in Poland: https://lnkd.in/gAc5uYXx

"We tell them to dance,” said Manja (right), a midwife at the Lumpa Community Health Post in Lumpa, Sierra Leone. Here, midwives encourage and support mothers in every stage of labor and delivery. Midwives at Lumpa deliver about 30 babies a month and face severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment, and are often without proper trainings. To help support these health care heroes, Project HOPE provided a Helping Babies Breathe training, teaching essential skills to help resuscitate newborns and provide postnatal care that ensures babies can survive. For months, Zambia has grappled with a severe drought affecting nearly half its population. The consequences are particularly dire for mothers and children living with HIV/AIDS. Extreme hunger and limited access to clean water are forcing many to skip essential medications. Moreover, as young women and children search for food and water, they face increased risks of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. The situation is also escalating incidents of forced child marriages and coerced sex in exchange for food and money, heightening the dangers of teen pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. This crisis highlights the critical intersection of climate change and healthcare access. It also underscores the urgent need for increased international support and funding for Zambia. Let us unite to address these intertwined challenges and advance global health. Project HOPE #GlobalHealth #ClimateChange #Zambia https://lnkd.in/e6apwauW

Russian forces have advanced their offensive in the northern Kharkiv region of Ukraine, which was previously occupied in 2022. The area – including the city of Kharkiv – is experiencing heavy shelling and around 7,000 people have evacuated to date, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian needs. Project HOPE has now been one of the first organizations on the ground, supporting communities throughout the region with mobile medical units and ambulances, essential supplies and mental health support through our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Center. It's expected that more people will be evacuated, the shelling will increase, and the need for humanitarian aid will grow. Learn more about our response: https://lnkd.in/eY4HD3-t

On May 7th, Israel launched a ground invasion in Rafah, taking control of the Rafah border crossing. Rafah was declared the last safe place in Gaza after relentless violence left most of area uninhabitable. Now, our team reports constant bombing and shelling, nearly every ten minutes. Nearly all of our staff in Rafah have evacuated and all of our clinics and medical points in Rafah are closed. We will continue to assess our operations on a day-to-day basis. We continue our call for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all hostages immediately. Find more information: https://lnkd.in/gqQ3RgNJ

Project HOPE is bolstering the institutional, organizational, and programmatic capacities of over 45 local and national NGOs across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger through three locally-led NGO Capacity Strengthening programs. We are working to foster greater engagement in humanitarian response and coordination, while enhancing local resource mobilization approaches. These collaborations will help facilitate new, lasting, and impactful strategic partnerships. Our team is in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, facilitating a 5-day residential learning program for L/NNGO colleagues, made possible through the generous support of the Regional Humanitarian Fund for West and Central Africa managed by OCHA’s regional office in Dakar, Senegal. We're proud to collaborate with local partners like Association Tin Tua and Secretariat Permanent des ONG (SPONG) to drive meaningful change. With similar workshops slated for Mali and Niger, we're committed to expanding our reach and impact, working closely with local NGO partners and national NGO platforms to build a more resilient and empowered humanitarian community.

No one should be left without life-saving medicines. With the support of Switzerland, we are making great efforts to provide medical facilities with the necessary medicines to ensure that vulnerable groups receive treatment on time. Project HOPE has distributed 60,000 packs of pharmaceuticals to 21 medical facilities across 6 frontline regions of Ukraine. The medicines will be transferred to mobile medical units to support people with limited mobility and patients with chronic diseases. “Thank you for not forgetting about us. The medicines we have received fully meet the needs of our patients and they will be used up very quickly,” says Olha, Head Nurse of the Primary Health Care Center #9 in Zaporizhzhia. Watch the full video to find out how the medicines were delivered.
