STOP the corporate shipping industry from putting pregnant orcas in danger!

There are only 73 Southern resident killer whales remaining in the wild, and these critically endangered species are nearing extinction.

But right now, there are THREE pregnant orcas in the Southern resident pods! While this is exciting news, many experts are concerned because studies show that a devastating 69% of Southern resident whales lose their babies before birth — and only 37-50% of baby calves survive their first year.

Meanwhile, corporate ships continue to cause dangerous ocean pollution that harms orcas and their habitats, driving their food sources away, and making it difficult for them to survive — particularly pregnant orcas who are especially vulnerable.

Southern Resident Killer Whales are at serious risk of becoming extinct. With only 73 orcas remaining, these iconic whales are starving, stressed, and struggling to survive — and the shipping industry is only making matters worse.

Right now, there are THREE pregnant orcas in the Southern resident orca pod. But sadly, a devastating 69% of Southern residents lose their babies before birth — and only 37-50% of baby calves live through their first year.

Two of the biggest threats to orcas right now are the Roberts Bank T2 Terminal and the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

The hazardous chemicals discarded by these massive ships can have far-reaching impacts, including toxic bloom, dead zones, pathogenic bacteria, and even oxygen depletion. They drive orca whales’ food supply away. They cannot survive with these interferences to their natural habitats and disruptions to the entire ecosystem.

I’m calling on you to take immediate action to protect orcas from extinction by enacting stronger protections for Southern resident orcas’ main food source – Chinook salmon. I also ask that you demand stronger mitigation measures for the oil tankers and cargo ships from the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and Roberts Bank T2 terminal projects to mitigate the disturbances and risk of oil spills they present to orcas and their critical habitat.

Please do your part and stop Big Oil and the shipping industry from pushing Southern resident orcas toward extinction.
