Demand BOEM stop Big Oil and Gas from destroying Cook Inlet!

If Cook Inlet is sold to Big Oil and Gas, it’ll lock the area into 40 more years of fossil fuel pollution. Our planet cannot afford this at a time when we have less than 9 years left to avert climate catastrophe.

Dear BOEM Officials:

WHEREAS, the rich and productive waters of Lower Cook Inlet are considered some of the most biologically productive marine waters in the world and are a critical component of the ecological integrity and biological productivity of the Gulf of Alaska;

WHEREAS, the rich and productive waters of Cook Inlet support more than $1 billion a year in economic value derived from local tourism businesses and commercial, sport, personal use and subsistence fisheries;

WHEREAS, the Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has proposed Oil & Gas Lease Sale 258 for over 1 million acres of waters in Lower Cook Inlet, stretching from just below Kalgin Island down to Augustine Island and across the mouth of Kachemak Bay;

WHEREAS, climate change and ocean acidification pose grave threats to Alaska's fisheries and the economies and coastal communities they support;

WHEREAS, oil & gas exploration and development in Lower Cook Inlet will pollute the area's pristine lands and waters, and industrialize a world-renowned ecologically intact and undeveloped wilderness landscape threatening the tourism and fisheries economies that depend on these values;

WHEREAS, in the 1996 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Lease Sale 149 in Cook Inlet, the federal government estimated a 72% likelihood of a large oil spill over two million gallons and drilling in the frontier waters of Lower Cook Inlet remains extremely risky;

WHEREAS, mechanical spill response technology remains inadequate to clean-up more than 10-20% of spilled oil in ideal conditions; and given the strong tidal currents, exposed coastline, and violent storms in the proposed lease area, the likelihood of cleaning-up spilled oil in Lower Cook Inlet is virtually nonexistent and oil would rapidly spread through the Gulf of Alaska causing irreparable harm throughout the region.

FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE-STATED REASONS, I OPPOSE OIL AND GAS LEASE SALE 258. I CALL FOR THE CANCELLATION OF OIL AND GAS LEASE SALE 258 IN COOK INLET AND TO HAVE THE OUTER CONTINENTAL SHELF COOK INLET PLANNING AREA PERMANENTLY WITHDRAWN FROM FUTURE 5 YEAR OIL AND GAS LEASE PLANS IN ALASKA.
