Tell Procter & Gamble to halt deforestation!

The Canadian Boreal Forest has been home to Indigenous peoples and herds of caribou for millennia. Tropical forests around the world are crucial to preventing climate chaos and provide habitat for endangered species like orangutans and Sumatran rhinos. But both are being clear cut by Procter & Gamble’s suppliers to source pulp for Charmin Toilet Paper and palm oil for consumer products.

Dear Mr. Taylor,

As your tenure at Procter & Gamble comes to a close, you have an opportunity.

You can leave this great American company with a growing legacy of fueling forest destruction in Canada’s boreal forests and the ancient forests of Southeast Asia – or you can make one last go at transforming an iconic business of the twentieth century into an innovative sustainability leader for the twenty-first century.

While some of your board members, like the chair of P&G’s Governance and Public Responsibility committee, have devoted many years and much sweat equity to denying the reality of the climate emergency, I’m sure you understand what’s at stake.

Yes, your company has made some small changes to mitigate the harmful impacts of sourcing ingredients from caribou habitat and the primary forests of Borneo and Sumatra. But from the perspective of these precious places and the people who steward them, P&G’s reforms have been cosmetic at best. The destruction continues. In its supply chains from Indonesia to Canada, P&G’s  suppliers remain embroiled in protracted land conflicts with local communities. Up to now, P&G’s response has been managed by sustainability staff and your company’s massive PR machine.

Mr. Taylor, enough is enough.

Angela Braly has chaired P&G’s Governance and Public Responsibility committee for over a decade. She is responsible for guiding the board’s recommendations on social responsibility issues, including human rights and sustainability. As you’re aware, Ms. Braly is also the chairperson of ExxonMobil’s Public Information and Contributions committee, garnering huge profits from a corporation whose viability is based on furthering the climate crisis. Given her utter failure to address P&G’s human rights and environmental violations, a significant percentage of your shareholders have committed to vote Angela Braly off P&G’s board.

As you have heard before, consumers like myself want to see P&G establish and enforce mandatory requirements to ensure deforestation and degradation-free sourcing of palm oil across the humid tropics and paper from the Canadian boreal. Given the urgency of addressing the dual climate and biodiversity crises, it’s essential that P&G make substantive commitments to reduce its impact on forests -- both for the communities and species that rely on these ecosystems, as well as to address the associated risks posed to P&G and it’s shareholders’ investments.

It’s your last chance to use your power as P&G’s CEO to lead by example, and put in place measures to truly protect our planet’s last precious places. Please do what you can.
